MONTHLY ENROLLMENT AND SCHEDULING Students receive one lesson per week unless otherwise requested. All lessons are taught in the Studio, located at 10819 Buchanan Court. Lessons are officially 30-minutes in length and are individual lessons, rather than group lessons. Year-round instruction (through the summer) in the Studio is strongly recommended, but not required. For those students who do not continue lessons during the summer, or who continue lessons at a different time during the summer, a special provision is made. So that students will not have to worry during the summer about retaining their previous year’s lesson time when school resumes in the Fall, students are permitted to “reclaim” the same time that they had at the “End of School Recital” in the previous month of May. However, for this to occur, students must pay for lessons for all three of the summer months. Students with lesson than three months of summer lessons will be assigned lesson times when school resumes in the Fall on a priority basis.
DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR (Mid-August through May) STUDENTS WILL BE CHARGED FOR ANY REGULARLY SCHEDULED LESSON, WHETHER THE LESSON IS ATTENDED OR NOT. LESSON FEES The cost of lessons is $20.00 per lesson or $80.00 per month plus a one-time only $10.00 enrollment fee for new students. (Four lessons per month = $80.00).
THE "FIFTH LESSON" OF THE MONTH The monthly fee is the same whether there are four or five lessons in the month. The fifth lesson ("free lesson") occurs three times each year. Technically, they are "free lessons" but in reality the Studio “reclaims” them by taking three holidays off per a year (Thanksgiving, December Holiday and Spring Break) for which the student is charged a full monthly fee. In this way, the student actually is charged for the 3 "free" fifth lessons. This arrangement is merely a way to minimize bookkeeping for both teacher and student. Thus, the parents can have the convenience of budgeting $80.00 per month consistently.
PAYMENT IS REQUESTED IN ADVANCE Payment is due in advance for each month's instruction. Please do not plan to pay "by the lesson" since enrollment and billing are handled on a monthly basis. A written statement will be mailed or presented to each student around the 1st week of each month. Payment is due by the 10th of each month. Please try to make your payment at the next lesson after your statement has been received. A $5.00 late fee will be charged for unpaid balances over $50.00 remaining after the 20th of each month.
PARENT PARTICIPATION Parents with no previous experience in private music instruction sometimes assume that their son or daughter should automatically be self-motivated to practice regularly without any parental encouragement. Although this is occasionally true, most parents will find that they must become involved by encouraging and motivating. If the student is having difficulty in his/her regular practice habits, parents are encouraged to share these problems with the instructor as soon as possible so that a workable solution may be found. PARENTS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME TO ATTEND THEIR CHILD'S LESSONS. The younger the child, the more valuable the parent's presence in the lesson. Parents of piano students who are 5 years old or younger are requested to attend the lessons with their child at least until the child turns six.
DAILY PRACTICE (These are suggestions only, not requirements!) The following is a minimum time allotment practice guide for piano and guitar students (not applicable to voice students). 1st year Youth --- 20 minutes per day; 6 days per week 1st year Adult --- 30-45 minutes per day; 6 days per week Intermediate Student --- 30-45 minutes per day; 6 days per week Advanced Student --- 60 minutes per day; 6 days per week (Daily practice goals should be challenging, realistic and flexible.)
WEEKLY GRADING FOR PIANO STUDENTS (Grading does not apply to adult students!) A grade scale of A+ to C will be used for each week's work. This provides some means for the parent to have a weekly evaluation of their child's progress. Theoretically students begin each lesson with a grade of "A". This grade may be raised to an "A+" by doing extra or unassigned work (music or theory). By earning an "A+" each lesson and attending all scheduled lessons each month, young students can earn the special recognition of being an "A+ Club Member". Fundamentally, the purpose for using a grading system is to encourage and motivate the student.
A student's grade may be lowered for the following reasons: (For piano students only.) (1) Forgetting to bring music, theory book, flash cards or assignment book. (2) For not completing assigned theory work. (3) Lack of adequate practice time. (4) Poor performance or lack of effort during the lesson.
A student’s grade may be raised to an “A+” for the following reasons: performance credit (such as playing in a recital or playing for a relative or a friend that you have not played for before no more than once each month), birthdays, passing a book, passing one of the seven sets of flashcards, extra practice time, or doing extra theory or an extra song.
This music Studio maintainsa basic dress code.Students are asked to not come to lessons wear clothing with pictures of human skulls, symbols of death or clothing with inappropriate terms or sayings.Body piercing, “gothic” dressing, spiked hair styles, or shirts that honor pagan gods or rock (or rap) groups which are known to encourage drug use, killing or inappropriate behavior are not allowed. Please be aware that Harry Potter books and other books which deal with the occult or which honor pagan gods are also not permitted in the Studio or in the waiting area. Please do not send these books for your children to read while they are waiting for their lessons.
The Schumperts respect the rights of others to have different views and we know that some of the issues mentioned above are considered by many to be socially acceptable. However, our family feels that it is important to establish and maintain what we believe to be biblically based standards for our home. The music studio is located in the Schumpert home and as such it observes the same standards which are set by the Schumpert family.
The enforcement of the above requests is not intended to embarrass or to judge any student. It has always been the policy of this Studio is to treat every student with courtesy and respect no matter what they wear or what items they bring to their lessons. Therefore, if any of the above requests are violated, that particular lesson will be courteously canceled (for that day only) and the student will not be charged for the lesson which has been canceled. Regular lessons will then resume the following week as scheduled. Parents will be contacted immediately in the event of any action concerning these matters involving any student. Thank you for your kind understanding and cooperation.
SPECIAL VOLUNTARY ACTIVITIES: (Participation in all special activities is voluntary.)
